Product Management

Understand what stakeholders need (and why!), then deliver a solution that truly meets their needs in a collaborative, intuitive manner

Driver

Are you and your team aiming to deliver a solution that truly delights customers? Do you have a clear sense of the problem to be solved? And can see you see a path to delivering value in a reasonable timeframe?

If you’re on the road to delivering something awesome but the who, what, why, and how are still a bit unclear, embracing a product approach to this solution may be of benefit.

Outcome

We will help you get clear on the roles, practices, and artifacts needed in product management. We’ll work with your team to get the customer insights, development, delivery, and continuous improvement flywheel spinning. And, ultimately, we’ll work together to deliver the solution that customers are clamoring for.

Approach

FlexPoint can plug into your existing product delivery team, or we can help you establish one. Our typical approach is for a seasoned FlexPoint team member to act as product manager during the critical portion of the product roadmap, and then we seek to mentor a full-time employee into the product manager role long-term.

We’ll set up or work with you to review/refine key product management elements, including roles, practices, and artifacts.

Roles: We’ll make sure the team is clear on roles and responsibilities, and that each seat is filled by someone who’s well equipped to deliver.

Practices: We’ll set clear expectations around discovery, prioritization, development, testing, and more. We’ll fit within the delivery methodology you’re using, or help you adopt Agile mindsets and methods.

We’ll be crystal clear on expectations around collaborations across teams, since this deviates substantially from other development methods.

One of the lynchpin areas here is including representation from across the team in discovery efforts, rather than having only the product manager and perhaps a business analyst involved. Building a shared understanding of who the customer is, what problem they’re seeking to solve, and why this is important (probably including how it fits into the bigger picture) is crucial the product team’s success.

Artifacts: We’ll steward critical product management artifacts for the solution to be delivered. These typically include the product roadmap, requirements, and a backlog of user stories to develop the solution. We’ll work with you to create templates that work well across the team to inform efforts, help us measure success, and to adapt to new information as easily as possible.

The line between product management and project management can be a bit fuzzy. We draw the line based on these characteristics:

  • Product managers typically lead the development of products, prioritizing initiatives and making strategic decisions about what gets built, in collaboration with customers.

  • Project managers oversee approved plans, managing schedules and resources to drive progress forward.
